
A developer is planning a $465 mixed use development in downtown Kansas City, Missouri that would include the conversion of a historic building into a music themed hotel. BR Cos. is proposing the development which would include a $273.3 million, 24-floor high-rise with 319 apartments in place of a small garage southwest of Eighth Street and Grand and restoring the historic Scarritt Building at 818 Grand Blvd. remaking it as a 167 guest room UMusic hotel in partnership with UMusic Hotel Development LLC. UMusic Hospitality and Lifestyle is a collection of music-based experiential hotels launched in 2020 by Universal Music Group and entertainment investment group Dakia U-Ventures. The proposed UMusic hotel will feature a Universal Music-branded recording studio, podcast studio and radio station. It also would establish a music school in partnership with the nonprofit Playing For Change Foundation, 28,000 sf of retail, a 1,400 seat music venue and full food and beverage services. The development team includes: Populous Architects, Hoefer Welker as architect of record, Clarkson Construction Co. and JE Dunn Construction as general contractors. Aristocrat Realty as project consultant, and Polsinelli PC providing legal services.
