A Boutique hotel is being proposed for the corner of 5th and Colorado in Santa Monica California squeezed onto a lot just over 40 feet wide. The Santa Monica Architectural Review Board reviewed a proposal for a hotel to be built in a narrow space between two existing residential buildings along Colorado Avenue, between 5th and 6th Street. The lot is the former site of the Angels Attic dollhouse museum and is only 41.75 ft wide. The proposed project would be eight stories high with 74 guest rooms, a ground floor restaurant, outdoor seating area, lobby, guest drop-off area, rooftop bar and two subterranean levels with a fitness area and business center. Howard Laks Architects, the firm designing the building, came up with an angled-balcony design. Rooms on the north and south sides of the building will have alternating, diagonal balconies designed to maximize views of Downtown Santa Monica, Santa Monica Pier, Marina Del Rey and Catalina Island on a clear day. The project will now proceed to the Planning Commission and if approved will return to the ARB for a final review.

The Nags Head Planning Board recommended that the town commissioners approve the site plan for Inn at Whalebone, a four-story 90-unit hotel being proposed for 6632 W. Pheasant Avenue in Nags Head, North Carolina. The property, situated near the Duck Thru gas station, is just south of Nags Head Golf Links and the Village at Nags Head and just north of the Soundside Event site where the event center is being proposed. The hotel would be accessed off of Lakeside Street, which is used as an access to the residential subdivision of Roanoke Shores, which lies west of the proposed hotel. House Engineering, P.C. is the applicant for the project, which would be located in the Village at Nags Head Hotel District. There are 93 parking spaces proposed for the hotel, which includes architectural features such as dormers and a covered porch area.

The Hilton Beachfront Resort Santa Barbara California is planning an 80-room expansion to the already existing 360 guest room hotel. The plan also includes an adult pool, spa, fire pit, lounge and bar. The main area for the expansion will be in the Northwest corner of the site by Calle Cesar Chavez Street and Cabrillo Boulevard. Drawings have been submitted to the City of Santa Barbara’s Historic Landmarks Commission for a review. The property was opened in 1986 by the late actor Fess Parker in collaboration with the Red Lion Hotel chain. It went through an extensive community review and a legal challenge. Mountain views were a key concern from the community members pushing back against the size and scale of the hotel. The plan also included the development of the Chase Palm Park extension and an open space nearby where another hotel has been in the planning stages for years. The hotel went through $14-million in renovations in 2018 when it was rebranded as the Hilton Beachfront Resort.

Plans for a seven-story hotel in downtown Columbia South Carolina’s Vista received an approval from the City Planning Commission. The commission approved plans for construction of a combined Homewood Suites and Tru Hotel, designed by architect Craig Otto. The 249-room hotel will occupy an L-shaped lot at Gervais and Williams streets in the Vista. The property would include outdoor patio space with a kitchen, fire pits and seating areas, as well as a 430-space parking lot with ground-floor space for artists’ studios. The project is being developed by Naman Hotels.

Hotel developer Pennbridge Lodging plans to build a Mariott AC Hotel and a second Element Hotel at 1015 W Grove St in downtown Boise Idaho. Pennbridge, owned by Jared S. Smith, previously developed the Residence Inn on Capitol Blvd. The project would rise 14 stories with a total of 271 guest rooms including a 149 for the AC Marriott project and 122 for the Element Hotel. The building would feature a basement with a small number of parking spaces and utility area. On the first floor, the parking garage for the project would start with an entrance on 10th St. across from Hotel 43, with an internal hotel entrance area. Along Grove St., the two hotels would each have distinct spaces – with the AC Hotel toward 10th St., and Element toward 11th St. Each hotel would include lounge and lobby spaces, as well as small outdoor seating areas on each corner. The second, third, and fourth levels would be made up exclusively of parking garage space or back-of-house functions like laundry. In total, the building would have more than 315 spaces. The Element hotel portion of the building would start on the 5th floor, with rooms forming a ring on 11th, Grove, and 10th. This floor would also feature a pool and spa, as well as a fitness center. Plans for the 5th and 6th floors show additional Element rooms.
The building then steps back to the corner of 10th and Grove for a tower-type approach, continuing through the 13th floor. The building’s top floor includes two roof decks, a banquet room, a boardroom, a bar, and a breakfast area. Jeff Roberts with SERA Design is the project architect.

A proposal to transform a parking lot next to Portland Maine City Hall into a complex of condos, shops and a 156-room hotel has been approved by city officials. Herald Square, would occupy a 2.26 acre parcel at 385 Congress St., bounded by Cumberland Avenue, Myrtle Street and Pearl Street. City Hall and Merrill Auditorium sit immediately across Myrtle Street. A 12-story hotel is the first of four building that would ultimately create three interconnected buildings and 667,000 square feet of residential and commercial space. The project is proposed by developer Joe Dasco, of Reger Dasco Properties and would also include 297 condominium units, 11,600 square feet of retail space, a 5,100-square-foot restaurant and 337 parking spaces in an underground garage. There would also be a 19,000-square-foot amenity deck a second-story, open-air promenade accessible to the public. Construction costs are estimated at between $200 million and $300 million. CBT Architects is designing the project.

The Twentynine Palms California Planning Commission held a public hearing on a proposed 95-room hotel adjacent to Project Phoenix which moved the project forward. A representative of the applicant, Robert F Tuttle Architects, on behalf of developer Verdant Twentynine Palms, LLC, was present at the meeting and took questions regarding the proposed development, Hilton’s Home2 Suites, located on the southwest corner of Freedom Way and the Paseo de Mara, 200 feet south of Twentynine Palms Highway. The commission approved two resolutions: an addendum to the Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration the project, and approval of the Conditional Use Permit, Site Plan and Design Review for the three-story hotel development. Issues that came up during the public hearing included the hiring of local workers, noise concerns, doubts around the sewage treatment plan, status of the hotel’s kitchen and alcohol license, and how the new hotel may impact the number of Vacation Home Rentals in the region. The new hotel will be pet friendly.

A 150 guest room Tempo by Hilton hotel is planned at Carmel’s Indian’s Clay Terrace shopping center. The five-story hotel would be built behind Kona Grill and open in spring 2024. The hotel would be managed by Vince Dora of Dora Hospitality Group and developed Equicor Hotel Group LLC. The hotel would be the first Tempo by Hilton in Indiana. The mid-priced Tempo brand, introduced in 2020, offers wellness rooms that include Peloton bikes and products from Therabody. Clay Terrace, near U.S. 31 and East 146th St., is owned by Washington Prime Group. Plans called for a hotel, apartments and office space at the 577,614-square-foot center. Dora has five other Hilton properties in its portfolio, including Hilton Garden Inns in Carmel and Fishers, a Home2 Suites by Hilton in Fishers and a Tru by Hilton in Indianapolis. A Tru by Hilton scheduled to open in Carmel in 2024 also will be managed by Dora. Dora also has nearly 20 other hotels in its portfolio under the Marriott, IHG and Choice brands.

The Silverthorne Colorado Planning Commission approved the preliminary site plan to build a new 147 guest room Element Hotel by Westin on Meraly Way. The hotel will be five stories, one story taller than the Hampton Inn next door to the west. To the north is the Summit Place Shopping Center and to the east is Anemone Trail Road and Solorado Townhomes. Developers estimate that construction will last 20 to 22 months. The project is being designed by project architect, Brittany Taylor or Obryan Partnership Architects. Summit Hotel Properties is the project developer. Tetra Tech is the Civil Engineer. IMEG is the Structural & MEP Engineer.

Hotel developer Blue Print Hospitality led by CEO Kunal Mody plans a complete renovation of the historic Herring Hotel in Amarillo Texas. Sandvick Architects has been selected to design the renovation which would be complete over the next three years. The hotel will feature a fully-renovated collection of 250 guest rooms and amenities. The hotel will also feature a rooftop lounge, business facilities, event ballrooms, restaurants, coffee shop, and retail options along with modernized amenities. The Herring Hotel was one of three oil-boom era hotels built in the 1920s. It was the largest of these types of hotels, and home to the Old Tascosa Room, where cattle and oil barons gathered to discuss business and unwind. The Old Tascosa Room featured western frescoes painted by noted muralist and artist H.D. Bugbee. Only one of the frescoes is intact after a water main flooded the basement several years ago. The hotel’s 14 stories and 600 hotel rooms made it the largest of the 1920s era buildings. Its builder, Cornelius Taylor Herring was a pioneer, cattleman, oilman and banker. He also owned 98,000 acres of the LS Ranch north of Amarillo. The Hotel was converted into federal office space in the early 1970s, but was abandoned a short time later.
