Developer JAP Real Estate LLC plans to build a 104-room Cambria Suites Hotel at 939-943 Route 1 in the Avenel section of Woodbridge New Jersey. The area is part of the Route 1/Area 21 redevelopment zone. The hotel will be built between Lord and West Smith streets on the site that formerly housed the City Hotel and the Star Hotel, which were destroyed by fire several years ago. The site also formerly housed a bar, known as Fitzgerald’s, and then The Spot, which opened briefly and then closed, according to township officials who previously described the site as “one of the ugliest on Route 1. The developer is looking to eliminate numerous access drives and create two new access drives. The project calls for 60 visitor parking spaces, 10 employee parking spaces and one loading parking space. The project calls for taking two lots, with a combined size of 40,733 square feet, to create the hotel space. Trees on both lots will be cleared to construct the new hotel, parking lot and landscaping. The new hotel is expected to complement the nearby Holiday Inn. The application was approved by the Planning Board on Aug. 11.
